Carl Larsson Monumentalmålaren in Swedish with a summary in English.

Carl Larsson (1853-1919) is well known for his idyllic portraits of his family at home in Sundborn in the Swedish county of Dalarna. His monumental paintings are less renowed, dispite several of them adorning famous public buildings in Sweden. Carl Larsson himself considered his monumental works to be the most important achievements of his artistry.

The book's cover is Midwinter Sacrifice, a monumental canvas by Carl Larsson. It shows the heathen King Domalde having himself sacrificed after years of bad harvests. After a protracted process, the painting was finally refused by Nationalmuseum in 1916 but since 1997 it has hung in the upper staircase of the gallery.
